He walked along the moving edge
Where the ocean meets the shore
Wandered where the children play
And smiled at all the good things
His only time spent not alone
Passing strangers on the beach
Furloughed from his solitude
Held captive by circumstance
He remembered growing up here
More than half a life ago
Long before the faces changed
The landscape and the lifestyle
He walked into the breaking surf
And dove beneath the waves
Then swam to meet the coming set
Just beyond the pounding break
A moment’s pause to catch his breath
And set up the perfect ride
An endless shoulder breaking left
That carried him to the sand
He sat on the beach and smiled again
As the salt rolled down his face
And stared out over the ocean
Floating on a sea of memories
Although he never said a word
He was grateful for this glimpse
The scenery will change with time
But the waves of the sea are constant
