The Visitor

The Visitor

There’s a spirit here
Asking to see you
Can you help me confirm
That his story is true

He waited all night
Outside the front door
And you’re the only one
Who can settle his claim

We found him playing
On the backyard swing
So we asked for his name
And he told us his tale

It seems this spirit
Has unfinished business
With a long lost lover
Who died in this house

As neighborhood kids
They grew up together
And fell in love one day
Like friends sometimes do

When he was fourteen
His folks moved away
Just old enough to love
Too young to have a say

The night he left town
Her heartbeat fell silent
And her ghost is waiting
For the day he returns

He said he was sorry
For keeping you waiting
But he couldn’t get here
’til his body gave way

I’ll let him inside
He seems to be sincere
If he is who he says
Your long wait is over
